Case Study: KANSHI BlockS

Monitoring of a crucial supply management ASP service

Global Dining, Inc.

Global Dining, Inc. operates a chain of restaurants throughout Japan. In each, the administration servers are connected over a network to share data of the time card management system, groupware, POS management, purchasing system, and file servers.

A crucial application for restaurant management is the ASP service for food delivery. If the chain stores run out of foodstuff, business is interrupted, which could end up in losses of 500,000 USD per day. That is why Global Dining has build a system with redundant proxy servers at their Tokyo headquarters and the Okinawa branch office.

In this situation, the system support leader, Yuji Miura, fully understands the need for an alive management system. Initially, he used a freeware application for pinging devices on the network to slash costs. But because of the restrictions of the number of devices that can be pinged and the lack of functions, he decided to implement a low-cost monitoring system with higher functionality, and so he took a close look at KANSHI BlockS Pro.

Mr. Miura decided employ KANSHI BlockS Pro because the price had been readjusted in March 2006 to just under 1,000 USD. When considering which monitoring system to purchase, he believed there were no other systems on the market in the same price range and with the same functionality.

Giving system administrators peace of mind

He also mentioned that it did not take long between purchase and actual operation. The company now has some fifty network devices, including nodes at its restaurants throughout Japan, and KANSHI BlockS Pro provides servicing and ping monitoring of these devices. When Mr. Miura receives email notification of a network problem, he can take measures such as rebooting the system remotely over an SSH connection. Mr. Miura talks about how implementing KANSHI BlockS Pro has changed the need to frequently provide emergency onsite support because the restaurants do not always have computer-savvy staff on hand.

"Because I can quickly assess a network problem, I can spend more time fixing the problem. As a result, I am more relaxed. Furthermore, because problems can be fixed faster, it saves me from having to manually repair the system, as was requested of me in the past when a problem occurred. This makes my job a lot easier."

Mr. Miura has future plans to use KANSHI BlockS Pro to perform alive monitoring of network cameras to strengthen the security of the stores.
